Halfway wild

Pen and ink sketches

The task

As one of 14 artists brought together for a “quick studies” exhibit, I needed to challenge myself to try different techniques that were both experimental and has space for creative fun. Pen and ink allowed for rapid sketching, and animals provided limitless subject matter.

Anything can happen in the blink of an eye. Anything at all.

Meg Cabot

Inspired by an etching that I had done the previous year, I started this sketching process with quick insect studies. Stripping these down to focusing on just one half allowed me to get to the structure and texture without worrying about symmetry. I moved on to mammals to play with a different scale and texture. I created the 12 sketches on heavy bond notecards over two evenings.

About Bare Bones
Bare Bones was the brainchild of artist Sydney Morrison.

“From overflowing drawers of newsprint gestures, tattered sketchbooks and abandoned studies, Bare Bones is the ultimate showcase of the studio brain. Fourteen emerging Toronto artists tackle the balance of process over product; embodying the fresh behind-the-scenes enthusiasm of raw imagery. In effect, Bare Bones is a testament to the artist process itself.”

I created over 20 pieces for this exhibit, diving into new, fast techniques that forced me to be more spontaneous and less of a detail perfectionist than my typical approaches to art had been. 12 pieces were bought on the opening night of a “buy it off the wall” show.
